Michael Mann's revolution in gun action

Michael Mann's " Heat " stylishly depicts the battle between the detective played by Al Pacino and the robber played by Robert De Niro, but the city battle in the middle part is said to remain in film history. Val Kilmer's magazine exchange here was so brilliant that it was praised by an army instructor. Michael Mann is famous for demanding thorough realism in his gun action, and there is a work that can be said to be the starting point of this. It is his theatrical debut " The Jack Reacher " (1981).

Mann had James Caan, who plays the main character, a safecracker, trained in "combat shooting" and required him to handle firearms realistically. Combat shooting is a "practical shooting technique" established in the United States, which is a systematic compilation of practical methods for how to effectively handle handguns in battle. James Caan makes full use of this combat shooting when he breaks into the enemy's house at the end of the film, demonstrating professional combat movements that are unnatural for a safecracker. He also performed the magazine change well.

When "The Cracker" was released in Japan, the late film critic Haruo Mizuno excitedly commented on the film on a TV program, saying, "This is an amazing film!" This is how revolutionary "The Cracker" was for action film fans. Since then, combat shooting has become a regular feature of action films, and the Weaver stance, in which the gun is held with both hands and the body is turned to one side, dominated action films in the 1980s. "The Den of Thieves" was the film that leapt to the forefront of the "gun action road" pioneered by Michael Mann.
