“Dead Poets Society” Synopsis

In 1959, in the new school year at Welton Academy, a boarding school in Vermont, English teacher John Keating (Robin Williams), an alumnus of the school, arrives as a new teacher. Keating tries to teach the students, who are bound by strict rules, the beauty of life, telling them to ``tear up that Pritchard textbook.'' At first, the students are perplexed by Keating's unusual classes, but they gradually become inspired to take action and discover fresh ideas and a free way of life unconstrained by rules or parental expectations. Those who fall in love, those who awaken to acting... Just when it seemed like everyone was starting to go their separate ways, an incident occurred.

Peter Weir ordered actors to live together

A sense of solidarity. That was director Peter Weir's top priority when directing ``Dead Poets Society''. I felt that this story would not have been possible without the sense of camaraderie that grows among the students who gather at a strict boarding school in Vermont, USA in 1959. Weir was well aware that there were limits to the power of directing alone in overcoming this problem, so he first proposed and had the actors live together in a large room. Furthermore, in order to accurately capture the process of them gradually closing the distance, sequential shooting was chosen for the shooting. The environment and the passage of time that were set up behind the scenes were captured on screen as they were.

And Weir also drew on the power of music. Josh Charles, who played one of the students, Knox, said that music was played throughout the set, helping the actors find a sense of calm and, at times, emotion. The thing that stuck with him the most was the magnificent melody of Ennio Morricone 's film The Mission (1986). Since then, Charles has confessed that he has developed the habit of listening to music in order to concentrate on acting.

Five years The Day After, Charles and Ethan Hawke met at the audition for `` Revenge of the Nerds '' (1984), and they were able to collaborate in ``I Dead Poets Society,'' which they had not been able to do at that time. Being directed by master director Peter Weir, sharing the screen with popular comedian Robin Williams, and striding nervously down the red carpet for the first time at the Venice Film Festival was a great experience for both of them, as well as for their other co-stars. For us, this is truly a school for us as actors. It was a school itself, just like the setting of the movie.
