A bold challenge that sheds new light on the hard-boiled genre.

It was written as if the director Rolland and the production team had broken down with the original author Pizzolatto, but according to the producer's statements, the situation is a little more complicated, and it doesn't seem like Pizzolatto was angry because the original work was altered. is.

After seeing the finished film, Pizzolatto's opinion was that "it cannot be said to be a work that I wrote alone," and while there was consideration of having it co-written by Pizzolatto and Mélanie Laurent, the Screenwriters Guild's rules did not allow joint writing, so as a compromise they decided to credit it under a pseudonym.

It is unclear whether Pizzolatto was satisfied or dissatisfied with the film, but it can be said that he made accurate judgments and criticisms in the sense that he recognized the impact that the subtle nuances added by Laurent and the actors had on the entire film.

Laurent himself also said that when he accepted the offer to direct this film, he thought it would be a different style from the original work and Pizzolatto's script. Laurent said, ``When I was approached as a French female director, I decided that the producers were expecting something different from the traditional American genre film.'' However, without changing the gist of the story, he worked with Fanning and Foster to develop the characters' emotions into realistic ones. As a result of this effort, ``Galveston'' stands out from the usual genre films and becomes a heartbreaking human drama.

In addition, Laurent faced the hard-boiled and violent elements of the original work head-on, and her exquisite sense of balance without getting swamped in sentimentality should also be praised. It is easy to explain that Laurent added a female perspective, but she was not satisfied with such a simple direction. In other words, Laurent did not reject genre films, but rather explored them in her own way, and there is no doubt that "Galveston" expanded the possibilities of the hard-boiled crime genre.
