Has the collaboration between an up-and-coming crime writer and a French female director fallen apart?

If you only knew the synopsis of the movie ``Galveston,'' you might think that a genre movie with a nostalgic flavor has arrived. A hitman who has been told he doesn't have much time left to live is betrayed by the boss of his organization and goes on the run with a teenage prostitute. Eventually, a love grows between the assassin and the prostitute that cannot be found between a man and a woman or a pseudo-parent and child...

This story is more like a typical V-cinema Yakuza story than a Léon: The Professional movie. A sentimental hard-boiled film about a corrupt criminal trying to protect a girl he has no connection to at the end of his life. However, if you know that this film was directed by French actress Melanie Laurent, you might realize that this film is different from your typical genre films.

"Galveston" preview

In the first place, ``Galveston'' is based on the debut work `` The Escape from Galveston '' by up-and-coming crime novelist Nic Pizzolatto. Even if you're not familiar with Pizzolatto's name, many people will say, "Wow!" when you introduce him to him as the creator of the drama series " True Detective " (2014-), which received rave reviews for its unusual and high-quality content. Pizzolatto also wrote the screenplay himself, starring Ben Foster, a talented actor who has been gaining acclaim in recent years for his work in films such as The Last Pursuit (2016) and Erasing the Footprints (2018), and Elle Fanning, who is currently making waves. It was made into a movie.

However, Pizzolatto's name does not appear in the screenwriting credits of the completed work. The person listed as the screenwriter is Jim Hammett. It's a pretty simple pseudonym, probably a mix of hard-boiled novelist Jim Thompson and Dashiell Hammett. What kind of problem arose between Pizzolatto and the production team? If we look behind the scenes, we can see the bold challenge Melanie Laurent attempted in ``Galveston.''
