Why does ``England is Mine'', which depicts a young Stephen Morrissey, resonate with you?

My young days when I couldn't go out and remained locked in my room and inside my brain.

First of all, at the beginning, the image of the muddy water of a canal overlaps with the main character Stephen's monologue, ``Life is so boring that it's worth avoiding...'' According to director Gill, this is ``a symbol of a drowning man.It represents what's going on in Stephen's brain.'' As he drowns, he clings to music and literature, trying to cling to someone who can rescue him.

Also, the monologue that overlaps with this was created by director Gill and co-screenwriter William Tucker: The Man and His Dream, inspired by letters that the young Morrissey sent to his pen pals, and it clearly shows Stephen's pessimism. This scene is repeated in the second half.

The melancholy atmosphere is also reflected in the landscape. As I wrote in the review of the theatrical brochure, this film, which was shot on location in Stretford, Manchester, has only a handful of outdoor scenes in broad daylight. Many of the outdoor scenes are at night, and even more of them are indoors. When I asked the director about this, he replied, ``This movie is a story about the main character thinking depressedly, so I wanted to create a feeling of being stuck inside his brain, unable to get out.'' Ta.

In that sense, ordinary films set in towns in northern England, such as The Taste of Honey (61), a classic of British youth films and a favorite of Morrissey, are typical of residential areas lined with old brick houses. You can't even see the scenery. According to the director, ``There aren't many of those old streets left in Stretford anymore.''
