``Wildlife'' Paul Dano's directorial debut fills the heart with ``feelings.''

Even the hearts of the viewers are dyed blue.

After watching this film, I felt that director Paul Dano's greatest weapon is his direction of acting.

There are many actors who have also been successful as film directors, such as Clint Eastwood, Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Jodie Foster, Kenneth Branagh, and Bradley Cooper, and their strength is that they "understand the feelings of actors." As actors, they can clearly indicate to their performers how to move and act, which also makes it easier to match them when casting.

Paul's characteristic as a director that emerges from this film is the unity of the tone of the acting. Perhaps it could be said that he has the ability to correct the "tone" when looking at everything on the screen, including the actors and the background, and the sense of "sharing emotions" among the cast and staff is outstanding. As a result, emotions such as "sadness" and "emptiness" are conveyed from the screen without any cloudiness, and even the viewer's heart is dyed blue.

It may be because he mainly calls on cast members and staff members who are on the same wavelength as him, but this is quite a unique ability. He is more like a painter than a director. Emotions jump into your heart before the plot.

Also impressive is the large number of shots in which the film quietly focuses on the characters' expressions. The loneliness and anxiety embodied by Ed Oxenbould as Joe and the resignation and vulnerability exuded by Jake Gyllenhaal as Jerry are memorable, but Carey Mulligan's performance as Carrie , who is growing older emotionally, is particularly striking. As Jerry leaves the film and her clothes become more flashy, the mother's pain grows. This can be seen as an evolution of Carrie 's mentally unstable performances from Drive (2011) and Shame (2011).

From the director's perspective, he can choose shots like this because he has complete faith in his actors. Perhaps it is because of his determination to capture the entire performance of the cast on camera, with the cast's "color" in harmony, that you can feel a strange "sense of freedom" in this story full of melancholy.

The dialogue in this film is kept to a minimum, but instead is very powerful. There are many lines that really pierce the heart, such as when Jerry, who is leaving, says to Joe, "I want to earn some money, but I don't have any," and when Janet, who has started to flirt with the wealthy, blurts out, "We were single once, too," and "If there's another way, tell me. I'll try it." The screenplay was written by two actors, Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, and each word works as an "ignition" to accelerate the acting.

However, on the other hand, Joe, who is taciturn and tends to read other people's faces, sees the two of them slowly falling apart, learns that his parents were also human, and is overcome with sadness.
