And then comes Robert Wise.

However, it was director Robert Wise who gave the film its charm as a location movie. Wise was promoted by Ernest Lehman, with whom he collaborated on ` `West Side Story .'' Lehman was captivated by the bird's-eye view of Manhattan that opens Wise's film ``West,'' and the overwhelming impact of the street filming that follows.

However, around that time, Wise was busy preparing for `` Gunboat San Pablo '' (66), and negotiations stalled. So Lehman approached William Wyler, one of his favorite directors, to direct the film. Although production continued, Wyler quit the project due to a delay in the script and ran out of time to begin production on `` The Collector '' (1965). After that, the abandoned script ended up in the hands of Wise, who had more time due to delays with Gunboat San Pablo. Impressed by the finished product, Wise was chosen to carry the megaphone, and pre-production finally began.
