Salzburg, Austria on the eve of World War II. The heroine, Maria, who was not suited to be a nun, liberates the Trapp family from their military-like discipline and revives them with song and humor. The process of Maria's presence bringing unity back to a family that had forgotten the warmth of family is spelled out along with the famous song. The second half, which includes an intermission, completely changes from the fun of the first half and explores the importance of ideology and peace.
