A ``heterogeneous existence'' that deviates from the mainstream of science fiction movies
Even if my genes go against me, I won't give up on my dreams.
Even if I lie about my identity, my heart remains mine.
A high level of design, a delicate world view, and above all, a precious belief. Since its release in 1997 (it was released in Japan the following year in 1998), it has become a ``torch in the hearts'' of many people. A science fiction drama that follows a young man who continues to strive towards his dream of becoming an astronaut despite being branded as a "defective product" in a near future where genes are supremacy. A heart-wrenching friendship with a partner who joins forces to make a dream come true, a suspense story depicting a life-threatening "identity fraud", a feud with a younger brother who is destined to become an elite, a romance with a woman who hides her true self, and after watching the film. A deep lingering aftertaste - a masterpiece that should become the cornerstone of your life.
First, let's look back at the films released in the United States in 1997. Even if we focus on The Fifth Element , this film stood out among the flashy works such as "The Fifth Element," " The Lost World: Jurassic Park ," " Men in Black ," " Contact ," and "Aliens." Considering that " Twelve Monkeys " and " Waterworld " were released in 1995, and " Independence Day " in 1996, it can be said that "Gattaca" was a film that was far removed from the mainstream of science fiction films at the time.
"Gattaca" preview
Looking at the box office revenue ranking, after debuting in 5th place, it has dropped to 9th and 13th place, and the domestic box office revenue was 12.53 million dollars against an estimated production cost of 36 million dollars (reference: Box Office Mojo). This work is sure to become a hit in this day and age of social networking sites, but it appears to have been a complete loss at the box office.
It was released in Japan in May 1998, at the same time as Starship Troopers (1997). I was 10 years old at the time, and it would be five or six years before I discovered this movie. Therefore, I cannot speak to the atmosphere at the time, but the reason I picked it up at a video rental store was not because it was science fiction, but because I was attracted to the artistry, and the people who went to theaters at the time had similar motives. I think it was.
However, just because this film did not do well at the box office does not mean that it is underrated. In 2011, it was chosen as the number one ``Realistic Science Fiction Movie'' by NASA, and continues to influence many subsequent works, including movies, manga, anime, and novels. If you were to vote for the best movie of all time among movie fans, it would definitely rank at the top. I myself came across this movie when I was a teenager, and it instantly became ``one of my life'' movies. Even now, that evaluation remains unchanged.
He has been a maverick since he was born into this world, and even though he is labeled as a "Gattaca," he continues to strive hard and eventually captivates people. It overlaps with the figure of The similarities are truly dramatic.
