Leave a fresh impression at a mini theater in Tokyo in the 1980s

The vivid movie experience that was on the other side of my memory comes back vividly. For a certain generation, this may be a work that evokes such thoughts. "My Beautiful Laundrette" was released in Tokyo in 1987. It premiered at Cinema Square Tokyo in Kabukicho, which at the time was known as a pioneering theater for mini-theaters.

Daniel Day-Lewis, who starred in `` Phantom Thread '' (17), is now a famous actor in movie history, but at the time he was a completely unknown newcomer. Director Stephen Frears later went on to make ``Dangerous Liaisons'' (1988) and became active in the Hollywood film industry, but he is also unknown. In addition, screenwriter Hanif Qureshi, who has earned acclaim as a writer and playwright, will also be introduced for the first time in Japan. At the time, the movie's box office value was largely unknown, but it was the now-defunct Western film distribution company Shochiku Fuji that introduced it to Japan (although they included some good movies).

At the time, I saw it without any prior knowledge, but it had a mysterious power, and before I knew it, I was drawn into its worldview. Furthermore, a shocking encounter with Daniel Day-Lewis... This work was the origin of his reputation as a chameleon actor.

“My Beautiful Laundrette” preview

The setting is South London in the 1980s. Omar (Gordon Warnek), a young man of Pakistani descent, is put in charge of a laundromat run by his uncle, a wealthy businessman, and recruits his childhood friend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis), a young white punk, to remodel the store. Omar's father was a talented journalist, but now he has fallen ill and his son is taking care of him. The father wants his son to go to university, but the uncle wants him to become a businessman. Despite the racial barrier between Omar and Johnny, they feel more than friendship, but eventually a turning point occurs for them.

A coming-of-age film about young men living in downtown London, depicting immigration, economic issues, and homosexual bonds. It was also a pioneering work for LGBT. At the time, I thought, ``I've never seen a movie like this before,'' because while it shows the harsh aspects of life, it also has some light humor and fantasy elements. In the UK, it was selected as Best British Film at the prestigious Evening Standard Awards, and also won the New York Critics Circle Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Best Original Screenplay in the United States. It was also nominated for an Academy Award in the same category.

Stephen Frears went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director twice, for `` The Grifters '' (1990) and `` The Queen '' (2006), becoming one of Britain's leading directors. On the other hand, Daniel Day-Lewis is the first to win the Academy Award for Best Actor three times for ` `My Left Foot '' (1989), ` `There Will Be Blood' ' (2007), and `` Lincoln '' (12). He will leave behind an unexplored feat.

By the way, the production company is Working Title, headed by Tim Bevan. After `` Four Weddings '' (1994) starring Hugh Grant, the company achieved even greater success as one of Britain's leading entertainment film companies, and this film was one of its early hits.
