Summary of Christopher Nolan's works: A genius who combines outstanding authorship with megahits
3. “Insomnia” (02) 118 minutes
This film, Nolan's first with a major studio, is somewhat of an anomaly in his filmography: a Hollywood remake of the 1997 Norwegian film of the same name, with Nolan only credited as director (though he appears to have contributed to the screenplay).
A bizarre murder of a young girl occurs in a town in Alaska under the midnight sun. A veteran detective (Al Pacino) is called in to investigate the case, but he suffers from insomnia in an unfamiliar environment. He also gets caught up in an accident and ends up being used by a mysterious man (Robin Williams).
The film stars three Oscar winners, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank, and the showdown between their performances is a highlight. In particular, Pacino's realistic acting as a man consumed by insomnia and Williams' crazy, bizarre performance as a good guy are memorable.
George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh are executive producers of this film, and it seems that they were the ones who discovered director Nolan in " Memento ." From the 1990s to the early 2000s, there was a boom in psychological suspense films such as " The Silence of the Lambs " (1991), " Seven " (1995), and "The Bone Collector" (1999), and this film can be said to be part of that trend (there is also the trend of absurd suspense films such as " Fargo " (1996)).
Director Nolan has shown his abilities in his original works, but the film's visceral "character-cornering" direction is cold-hearted, and he has demonstrated his skills as a more refined director since "Memento." His dynamic landscape cut-outs are also inherited from " Interstellar " (2014).
