The path to film production that I arrived at after searching for myself

She had been on the sets of her father's movies since she was a child, but she never dreamed of becoming a film director. Although he had a vague desire to do some creative work, he was trying to stay away from something as strange as movies. If you think about it, it's obvious. It's strange that he would voluntarily commit himself to a job where he would be compared to his great father. Sophia wanted to express her creativity on a different path than the one set by the Coppola family.

First she turned to fashion. She started working at Chanel as an intern at the age of 15, studied under famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, and launched her own brand "MILK FED." at the age of 23. Sofia was also interested in photography and worked as a photographer, and took advantage of her good looks to try her hand at modeling and acting. In short, he has dabbled entirely in ``creative activities other than film production.'' However, it is unclear what he really wants to do. In an interview, she recalled her feelings at the time:

``When I was in my 20s, I had just graduated from university, and I was confused about what I wanted to do. I had a feeling that I didn't understand.'' (From ``Eureka March 2018 issue special feature = Sofia Coppola'')

“Lost in Translation” preview

In Lost in Translation (2003), the young wife played by Scarlett Johansson tells Bill Murray, ``Even if I try to be a writer, my writing is terrible, and even if I take pictures, I can't do anything good.'' There is a scene in which she confesses, ``I don't know what to do,'' and this is probably an honest copy of Sofia Coppola's feelings at the time. She was on a journey of "self-discovery."

Then a turning point comes for her. Her friend Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth gave her a copy of Jeffrey Eugenides' best-selling novel, ` `Five Sisters Who Suicided During Dragonfly Season .''

Set in a suburban town in Michigan in the 1970s, this is a mysterious story about five beautiful sisters between the ages of 13 and 17 who take their own lives. Sofia was shocked as if she had been struck by lightning, and as if driven by something, she wrote up a scenario. In fact, at this point it had been decided that it would be made into a movie, and there was already a scenario written by another screenwriter. The company, not satisfied with the script, adopted Sophia's own scenario. Thus, guided by the Coppola family's blood, she descended into the world of film.

"Movies can cover a variety of fields that I'm interested in, so I decided that this was it." (From "Eureka March 2018 Special Feature: Sofia Coppola")

If you think about it, Michael Corleone in `` The God The Father '' was the only one in his family who did not get involved in the underworld, and although he joined the military after The Graduate from university, he ended up choosing to become a mafia boss. Sophia also distanced herself from film and sought out her own creative pursuits, but after many twists and turns, she became a film director. She ended up tracing the life of Michael Corleone in the Coppola family.
