Why The Virgin Suicides Coppola didn't solve the girls' Enigma in ``The Virgin Suicides''

Overflowing with good taste in pop culture
Although Sofia Coppola already has directing experience with the 14-minute short film ``Rick the Star'' (1998), this is her first time directing a feature film. It's not hard to imagine that it was a lot of pressure for a girl who was still in her 20s. However, she had an overwhelming weapon that no one else could imitate. Yes, there is a weapon called "Sense".
From the time she was born as the eldest daughter of the Coppola family, she received a creative education. Sophia has been surrounded by good friends, dressed in good fashion, watching good movies and photos, and listening to good music, and has absorbed a lot of good taste in pop culture. Although he may not have developed outstanding film theory, he more than made up for it with a keen sense of smell.
First, when searching for a suburban American town to film in, she referred to Takashi Homma's photo book. It contained photographs of the outskirts of Tokyo, a foreign land, but I found beautiful details in the seemingly ordinary cityscape.
When shooting, I focused on using soft focus to gently envelop the subject. The appearance of white-skinned girls standing in the dim light has a neatness reminiscent of David Hamilton, who also continued to take photographs of beautiful girls. Edward Lachmann, who has worked on many non-Hollywood films such as Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog, was invited as the cinematographer.

They also paid attention to the sisters' fashion sense, including lace dresses, floral camisoles, and knit hoodies. An outstanding choice that is girly yet has an erotic feel that is not typical of a girl. Of course, the props carefully placed in the five sisters' rooms, such as stuffed animals, flowers, and accessories, are also very thoughtful.
His taste in music is also brilliant. While choosing '70s soft rock songs by Gilbert O'Sullivan, the Bee Gees, and Carole King as ready-made songs, they also used dreamy, electronic music by the French duo group ``Ale'' as the soundtrack. The floating feeling is completely in sync with the young girls' youthful yet dangerous adolescence.
As Sofia Coppola professed, ``Movies can cover all the fields that I'm interested in,'' Sofia Coppola instilled her good taste in photography, fashion, and music into every corner of her films.
