Kevin Costner's misfortune

Kevin Costner, on the other hand, was recommended by Art Linson, the producer of The Untouchables. At the time, Costner appeared in popular films such as ``Francis'' (1982), ``One from the Heart'' (1982), and ``When We Reunite'' (1983), but all of his scenes were cut. It was a time of misfortune. He was eager to appear in ``War The Game'' (1983), starring Matthew Broderick, and even turned down the lead role, and when it came to ``When We Reunite,'' in which he appeared in a supporting role, Kevin was cast in the film in order to shorten the running time. All scenes have been cut.

``A Time of Reunion'' is a story about college friends who reunite for the first time in 15 years after a friend commits suicide. Yes, Kevin was playing a friend who committed suicide. The only traces of him appearing in the film can be seen in the faint image of his corpse. For this reason, Kevin Costner was known in Hollywood at the time as ``the guy who sleeps on the editing room floor.'' This happened after he was ridiculed for the fact that the film of the scene he appeared in was thrown away (on the floor) without being used.

Brian De Palma recalls calling his film buddies Steven Spielberg and Lawrence Kasdan to discuss his concerns about casting Kevin Costner, a relative unknown. Spielberg directed the fifth episode of season 1 of his TV series ``Amazing Stories'' (1985), titled ``The Last Mission'' (which was released theatrically in Japan), and the lead role Kevin was appointed. Kasdan not only cast Kevin in the lead role as Scott Glenn's younger brother in the Western film Silverado (1985), but was also the director of When We Reunite.

When asked about the appointment of Kevin Costner, both of them affirmed in unison, ``Kevin will definitely be a big hit.'' In fact, Art Linson saw Kevin in Silverado and approached him even before the script was complete. Incidentally, director John Badham, who was unable to work with him on ``War The Game,'' cast the still-almost-unknown Kevin in the lead role in his next film, ``American Flyers'' (1985). Although he was ridiculed as ``the guy who sleeps on the editing room floor,'' his ability as an actor gradually became known within Hollywood, and before he knew it, he became ``the actor I wanted to work with.''

At the time, I was watching ``The Untouchables'' at a movie theater in Canada. At the same time, ``No Way Out'' (1987) was also shown at the multiplex, and I had become a fan of Kevin from the beginning after watching ``Fandango'' (1985), so I thought, ``Kevin Costner's era has come!'' I remember him being very proud.

Incidentally, Kevin Costner and Don Jon, who was originally a strong candidate for the role of Ness, are close friends in real life. They later co-starred in ``Tin Cup'' (1996), and Don Johnson later revealed that he was more pleased than anyone else that Kevin, who had been so unlucky, was cast in the role of Ness, and that he celebrated by himself. I'm confessing that. However, director Brian De Palma was reluctant to cast him because he was unsure whether a virtually unknown actor would be able to stand up to the big gangster played by Robert De Niro.

The role of Al Capone, which was played by Robert De Niro and left a strong impression, was actually supposed to be played by another actor. That person is Bob Hoskins from England, who was attracting attention for his work in ``Mona Lisa'' (1986). Since Sean Connery had already been cast, De Palma was worried that the film, which was supposed to be an American gangster movie, would end up looking like a sophisticated British stage play, so he decided not to hire him.
