One of the original title candidates was "1984 1/2".

Many of his films feature bizarre adventure stories in which the protagonist rushes forward regardless of his pretensions. This was true not only of `` Don Quixote ,'' but also `` The Adventures of Baron Munchausen ,'' `` Time Bandits '' (1981), and even his early work `` Monty Python and the Holy Grail '' (1975).

Compared to these, the world view of ``Brazil'' is somewhat unique among Gilliam's works, and it may be in the category that is the origin of `` Twelve Monkeys '' (1995) and `` Future Zero '' (13). . One theory is that the original title idea was "1984 1/2." It is easy to imagine that this is a cross between George Orwell's novel `` 1984 '' and Fellini's masterpiece ` `8½ '' (63).

Full-scale production of this work began in 1983. In other words, we are right on the verge of the ``future'' that Orwell described in his novels at the end of the 1940s. Although Gilliam had not read the novel, it seems true that he was conscious of it as an homage. In addition, the interplay of dreams and reality, including the scenes of flying, clearly shows the influence of Fellini. Gilliam also mentions keywords such as ``Franz Kafka'' and ``Walter Mitty'' when talking about this work.
