Re-filming the love fantasy of yesteryear

A remake of Victor Fleming's fantasy A Guy Named Joe (1943) starring Spencer Tracy, Always follows the story of World Always II unchanged, except that it changes the central character from a fighter pilot to an air firefighter. Richard Dreyfuss plays Tracy, Holly Hunter plays Irene Dunne, and Audrey, credited in a "special appearance," gives a strong performance as the heavenly messenger Hap.

The story of a lover who dies and appears in the world as a ghost is reminiscent of " Ghost " (1990), but "Always" was released about a year before "Ghost," so it is worth noting that it was a precursor to similar films such as "Ghost."

Now, this work was a long-cherished project that Spielberg had been planning for many years. He thought of remaking "A Guy Named Joe" when he was shooting " Jaws " (1975), when he was attracting attention as a new film director. However, the source of the idea was not Spielberg, but Richard Dreyfuss, the star of "Jaws".

Dreyfuss is an avid fan of "A Guy Named Joe," having seen it more than 35 times. For Spielberg, who watched it late at night as a child, the film was "one of the films that inspired me to become a filmmaker," and he felt a sentimental connection to the era in which his father, an Air Force veteran, lived.

At first, it was a remake that came out as a joke, but it gradually started to move as a full-fledged project, so you never know what's going to happen with a movie until the end. "Always," which was produced in this way, is the culmination of Spielberg and Dreyfuss' collaboration, following the great successes of "Jaws" and " Close Encounters of the Third Kind " (77).
