First positive transgender role in a major production

Roberta Muldoon's role in ``The World According to Garp to Garp'' is remembered as one of the first ``transgender roles'' in a major Hollywood production. This is because it gave a heroic aspect to transgender people, who until then had been treated as either a tragedy or a laughing matter.

John Lithgow was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The World According to Garp. He quickly became a major actor. In fact, at the Academy Awards this year (1982), Dustin Hoffman for " Tootsie " was nominated for Best Actor, Julie Andrews for " Victor/Victoria " was nominated for Best Actress, and Robert Preston from the same movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It was done. Lithgow plays a transgender character, and Preston plays a gay man who cross-dresses. Andrews plays a crossdresser. And Hoffman plays an actor who cross-dresses to get work. It's a bit forced to lump together sexuality and cross-dressing, and there are aspects of the way the roles are designed that are controversial by today's standards, but the fact that so many roles that make us think about gender were recognized at the Academy Awards is revolutionary for the times. was. Unfortunately, all four missed out on winning the award. Incidentally, the main character played by Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie has transgender elements in a broad sense. On the surface, it's a simple act of cross-dressing, but if you watch the documentary ``Transgenders and Hollywood: Past, Present, and More'' (20), you'll understand that you shouldn't judge based on that alone.

Glenn Close, who plays Jenny, was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Supporting Actress) for ``The World According to Garp'' along with John Lithgow. The World According to Garp is Close's feature film debut. The producer saw her perform and selected her for the role. Jenny refuses to have sex with men for any purpose other than procreating children, and dedicates her life to caring for women who have been sexually assaulted. This role, which has become an icon for feminists who go to extremes, is certainly worthy of an Academy Award, but it was Glenn Close's versatile acting skills that humanized the role. She went on to win Fatal Attraction Actress four times ('87, '87, '88, 'The Life The Truth Mr. Albert ', '18) and Best Supporting Actress four times. He has been nominated three times (for `` When We Reunite '' in 1983, `` The Natural '' in 1984, and `` Hillbilly Elegy '' in 2020), but has yet to win an award.

In the history of the Academy Awards, Geraldine Page finally won the award after being nominated for the eighth time for ``The Journey to Bountiful'' (1985). There is also a record that Peter O'Toole has been nominated for the Best Actor award a total of eight times, including for `` Lawrence of Arabia '' (62), but never won (he only won an honorary award in 2003).
