Emotions, anger, sadness, and happiness created by strong characters

A little before 2020, Hollywood movies and dramas have been looking for more diversity, but from the beginning they consciously featured a lot of characters who were diverse in various aspects such as race and sexuality. A novel by John Irving.

Among the works that were made into movies, the diversity of characters was outstanding, to a level that was surprising even at the time. Even when I put my works side by side again, such as ``The World According to Garp'' (1982), `` Hotel New Hampshire '' (1984), ` `Simon Birch '' (1998), and `` The Cider House Rules '' (1999), they are still ``different from those around me.'' The emphasis is clearly on characters who take things in a positive light and the drama they create. When considering the history of Hollywood, it can be said that Irving's early works foreshadowed the movement decades later.

The World According to Garp is John Irving's fourth full-length novel, and the one that brought him worldwide fame. After it was released in 1978, it became a huge bestseller, and was quickly made into a movie in 1982.

The basic story is quite sensational. The main character, T.S. Garp, is a child born to his mother, Jenny, a nurse, through unilateral sexual intercourse with a soldier who was in a coma due to a war injury. T.S. is Technical Sergeant. In other words, his father's nickname, "Sergeant Garp," was given to his son. The third sergeant dies, and Jenny raises Garp single-handedly. Garp, who has been obsessed with wrestling since he was a boy, eventually becomes a novelist, while Jenny's autobiography becomes popular, and she becomes worshiped by feminist groups. This story, in which the fate of a parent and child unfolds with ups and downs, was perfect for a movie.

Based on his love of wrestling and novels, as well as his own experience of being raised by a single mother, John Irving, the original author, was cast as the main character in ``The World According to Garp.'' Appearance). There are parts of the novels written by Garp that are in sync with Irving's other works, such as ``Hotel New Hampshire.'' Furthermore, it is unique in that it is filled with elements that are topics that are still relevant decades later, such as gender issues such as sexual violence, sexual minorities, political activities of ordinary people, and parenting by fathers. .

These elements, which seem to be ahead of their time, accelerate the rapid development of Garp and Jenny's fate. Garp's life is full of joy, anger, and sadness, and although he always has a pessimistic feeling, just as the phrase "all humans are patients on the verge of death" is mentioned many times in the original story, The artist's style, which combines the optimism of trying to live his life by accepting the truth honestly, and the lightness of human truths, remains timeless.

The family of Garp and Jenny are also quite impactful characters, but they are surrounded by a strong cast of characters. One of them is former American football star Roberta Muldoon. His name during his playing days was Robert. In other words, a person who has transitioned from male to female is a transgender person. Roberta, who agrees with Jenny's book and way of life, helps Jenny build a ``temple'' for women who have suffered sexual violence, and becomes good friends with Garp. Those who read the original story before it was made into a movie must have had an image of Roberta in their heads, but in the movie they were probably surprised to see her appearance far more than they expected. He was played by John Lithgow. At the time, there was no masterpiece yet, but he is tall, over 190cm tall, and has a muscular physique that makes you believe he is a football player. He appears in the appearance of a woman, and sometimes becomes violent. And to protect the weak! The sight was refreshing. Incidentally, Lithgow later appeared in cross-dressing in `` Raising Cain '' (1992), which left a lasting impression.
