What is the actual situation of "Operation Enslapoid" aimed at assassinating high-ranking Nazi official Heydrich?

“Anthropoid' (2016/Director: Sean Ellis) has a tremendous sense of tension throughout the film. It transcends the boundaries of so-called social circles and has a rich appeal as a movie, with sharp suspense and action, while also having the sharpness to bring out a moment in history vividly as an ``unchanged reality.''

Many war movies, especially those based on World War II, have been made recently, and one of the most prominent themes is the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, led by dictator Adolf Hitler. This cruel and destructive political and military activity, which can be called a singularity in human history, has been featured in a huge number of works from various angles due to its intensity. Ironically, if you were to count the most recurring motifs in film history, Nazis would rank pretty high.

Among these ``Nazi movies,'' ``Operation Ensrapoid,'' despite its unusual subject matter, has been made into a film several times. That was the code name for a plot to assassinate Nazi SS General Reinhard Heydrich in Czech Republic, Eastern Europe under German rule, in 1942 (Enslapoid means "ape").

Heydrich, nicknamed ``The Blonde Beast'', led the Gestapo (secret state police), promoted the persecution and massacre of Jews, and was said to be the No. 3 Nazi leader at the time, following Hitler and Himmler.

What is the history of "Operation Ensrapoid"? Soldiers sent by parachute from Britain at the direction of the government, with the help of the Prague Resistance, desperately aim to carry out a dangerous mission - to assassinate Heydrich. However, what is unique about this plan is that even if it succeeds, it is expected to result in thorough retaliation from the Nazis. In fact, the purge of indiscriminate executions carried out by the Nazis in response to the operation was frightening, resulting in the casualties of not only the executioners and their surroundings, but also the general public. In reality, this strategy is said to have been too costly.

A new work depicting the progress of the operation and the outcome of the retaliation with solid realism is ``Anthropoid.'' Although the dialogue is in English, the film was actually filmed in Prague, Czech Republic, making full use of handheld cameras to create a true masterpiece.

In conjunction with this work, we would like to introduce two masterpieces from past films depicting Operation Enslapoid that can still be easily viewed on DVD. If you compare them, it will serve as a good example of how the same incident can have such a different impression depending on how it is depicted.
