Negotiations with Gene Hackman to appear in the film went through difficulties

Among them, the character Royal Tenenbaum was the one who decided the direction of the story. As the script explores the role that was originally intended for Gene Hackman, the story takes a more wild and free-spirited turn.

However, when it came to the crucial stage of negotiation for the role, Hackman was by no means an easy opponent. To begin with, this film does not have ample production costs, and the appearance fee is extremely low for a legendary actor. On top of that, the main character has to appear in various scenes, so the period of detention is extremely long.

Anderson enthusiastically persuaded him, saying, ``I wrote this role with you in mind,'' but Hackman replied, ``I don't like it written with me in mind.'' (``What do you know about me?'') (He seems to have a feeling of "What?"), but the conversation doesn't come to an end.

Hackman's reluctance also seems to be due to the fact that he has three children and is a divorcee. However, in the end, he reluctantly decided to appear in the role after his agent's enthusiastic recommendation.

Incidentally, once filming began, there were many scenes where Hackman would raise his voice on set, and one theory is that Bill Murray went out of his way to be present even on days when he wasn't working, to protect Anderson from his barrage of fire. It is said that there were some cases (*1). The strong solidarity between the two, which has continued since `` The Rushmore '' (1998), can be clearly seen from this point of view.
