Producer's declaration to "make a music movie"
There are theme songs and songs in the movie that are integrated with the story and theme of the movie. In many cases, the songs are ``composed'' to match the content of the movie, or with an image in mind. Famous songs include " My Heart Will Go On " from " Titanic " (1997) and " Moon River " from " Breakfast at Tiffany's " (1961). On the other hand, there are countless patterns in which pre-existing songs are used and they fit perfectly into the movie, as if they were created specifically for the movie.
`` Melody Fair '' in ``Melody'' released in 1971 is a typical example of the latter.
For producer David Putnam, who has produced such films as `` Downtown Story '' (1976) and `` Midnight Express '' (1978), and won the Academy Award for Best Picture for `` Chariots of Fire '' (1981), ``A Melody'' was ' was his second full-length work. As with his previous film, `` Performance '' (1970), which starred Mick Jagger, Putnam was particular about featuring music strongly in ``A Melody.''
"I make music films because music is the world's common language. Through music communication, I create a world of love and peace. In that sense, ' Melody' is a kind of musical film." Putnam declared (from the liner notes of the ``Melody'' soundtrack).

The soundtrack for ``Melody'' features five Bee Gees songs. “ In the Morning ” was released in 1965, “ Love Somebody ” was released in 1967, and three songs, “Melody Fair,” “ Wakaba no Koro ” and “ Give Your Best ,” appeared on the 1969 album “ Odessa .” ” was included. In other words, all of the songs pre-dated the movie, and were already widely recognized as masterpieces.
This style of using a number of existing songs to match the theme of the movie was also seen three years earlier in `` The Graduate '', which included Simon & Garfunkel's existing masterpieces, but in the case of the same movie, ` `Mrs. Robinson '' was written specifically for the movie.
