“Sicario: Day of the Soldado” synopsis

A suicide bombing attack takes the lives of 15 civilians at a commercial facility in the United States. Believing that the criminals entered the country illegally through Mexico, the government orders CIA operative Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) to disrupt a drug cartel that runs an immigration business in the border area. In response, Matt requests the cooperation of his old friend, assassin Alejandro (Benicio del Toro), who is bent on revenge against the cartel. He kidnaps a drug lord's daughter Isabel (Isabela Moner) and plots to provoke a war between the cartels. However, this secret operation takes an unexpected turn due to a surprise attack by the enemy and a ruthless change in policy from the US government. Alejandro, forced to become stranded in Mexico, faces a harsh dilemma between his duty as a soldier, his desire for revenge, and the life of the girl he is protecting as a hostage...

The absence of Emily Blunt, the lead actress from the previous movie, which surprised the audience.

``Sicario: Day of the Soldado'' is a sequel to 2015's ``Sicario.'' Just like the previous work, the work has been highly evaluated. Furthermore, when comparing the box office revenue in North America, the sequel is currently slightly higher than the sequel, so it can be said that it was a success from a business perspective.

However, there are many unusual points about this work that make it difficult to simply call it a sequel. This is because, although the story is a continuation of the previous work's content, the central cast and staff are conspicuously absent. I already wrote in a separate article that director Denis Villeneuve passed the baton to Italian director Stefano Sollima, but other actors include cinematographer Roger Deakins and music composer Johann Johansson (who passed away in February 2018). This work is dedicated to Johansson), whose name does not exist here either.

What is most surprising is that Emily Blunt, who played the main character in the previous film, does not appear at all here. Is it really possible to have a sequel where the main character doesn't continue to play the role? Isn't this a soulless sequel in name only?---Isn't it only natural that such concerns arose among fans?

However, if we look at the conclusion first, this is an absolutely wonderful work. Moreover, I cannot help but feel that Emily Blunt's unexpected ``absence'' made this film even more interesting.
