Alien is a great science fiction series, the first by Ridley Scott and the second by James Cameron. Fincher, who had worked on music videos for Madonna and the Rolling Stones at the time and was attracting attention as a new generation of video creator, was given the high-pressure third project.

It was his long-awaited debut in a theatrical film, but he was constantly having trouble with the lead actor, Sigourney Weaver, and had daily fights with the studio. When the film was finally completed, it received a storm of negative reviews, and a depressed Fincher commented, ``I'd rather die from colon cancer than make another movie!'' The hard-edged story with strong religious overtones is refreshing to watch now.

Fincher, who had suffered from film phobia, took great pride in adapting a dark scenario written by Andrew Kevin Walker, inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost and Dante's Divine Comedy.

By making full use of the developing technique ``Silver Remain'' developed by the famous Japanese photographer Kazuo Miyagawa, he created visuals with strong contrasts that are suitable for the dark worldview. It's a psychological suspense drama that is representative of the 1990s, but Fincher describes it as ``a horror movie in which humans gradually lose control of themselves.''
