The Coen brothers' masterpiece, the secret behind its charm

If there is a movie that I want to see in the winter, for me, who grew up in a snowy country, ``Fargo'' (1996) is one of them. Needless to say, this is the masterpiece of the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan. The setting is Minnesota, USA, which is also the brothers' hometown. The desolate and cold snowy landscape leaves a lasting impression.

Let's take a look back at the story of "Fargo." Jerry, a car dealer in debt, plans a fake kidnapping of his wife and hires two thugs, Carl and Gere. The wife's father is a successful businessman, so paying the ransom should be easy. The plan is carried out, but the gears start to go awry when Carl and Gere end up killing three policemen while on the run. Marge, the police chief who is in charge of the investigation, approaches the truth of the case little by little with calm deduction. On the other hand, an unforeseen situation occurs when the ransom is handed over, and more corpses end up lying around...

“Fargo” preview

The main character of the movie is Marge, but she doesn't appear until a third of the way through the story, so it could be more of a group drama. The story is suspenseful, as people who are possessed by greed go astray, and as a result, tragedy unfolds, but it is also a comedy, and at the same time a realistic human drama. The story is chilling, but it doesn't end there. Let's take another look at the appeal of this film, which was nominated in 7 categories at the 1996 Academy Awards.
