The cruel “reality” that lurks behind the “euphoria”

Now, let's take a look back at the synopsis of "La La Land." The setting is Los Angeles. Mia (Stone), an actress aiming for a break while working part-time at a cafe at a Hollywood film studio, accidentally befriends Seb (Gosling), a jazz pianist. He, too, was unable to make the music he really wanted to make, and was living a life of frustration. Although the two sometimes clash as artists, they understand each other as dream chasers, and gradually come to understand each other. Eventually, that feeling turns into love.

The films nominated for the Academy Award that year were surprisingly masterpieces, including `` Moonlight ,'' ``Manchester by the Sea ,'' ` `The Arrival ,'' `` Hidden Figures ,'' and ``Lion, '' but this film was one of the best. It is characterized by its overwhelmingly gorgeous, colorful and bright tones.

The lyrics were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who also worked on " The Greatest Showman " (2017), and the music was composed by Justin Hurwitz, an ally of director Chazelle. You'll be captivated by the colorful images of LA's famous landmarks. Many young people in Japan cite this film as the reason they got into Western movies, and it almost always ranks high in popularity polls for Western movies. It's friendly even to beginners, and is full of the ``euphoria'' typical of movies.

However, the essence of "La La Land" doesn't stop there. It perfectly covers the ``fun'' that I just mentioned, but the more you dig into it, the more the pain and cruelty of the dream chaser becomes apparent. The ``bitter seasoning coated in sweet'' is exquisite. Especially for creators who are in similar circumstances to Mia and Seb, I think this is a story that can be enjoyed.

The film draws heavily on Gosling and Stone's experience as juniors, and the humiliating scene in which the judges answer another phone call during the audition was Gosling's idea. Stone's circumstances overlap with Mia's, as she moved to Hollywood with her mother at the age of 15 to become an actress. The misfortune that Mia and Seb find themselves in is by no means a fantasy, but a real test that faces anyone who tries to make a living through the arts.

If you're a comedian, it's `` Joker '' (19), or the movie that influenced you, ` `The King of Comedy '' (1982), if you're a theater artist, you can watch `` Gekijo '' (20), which was adapted from a novel by Naoki Matayoshi. It is a detailed depiction of people struggling to become someone, similar to `` Solanin '' (2010) and `` Blue Period, '' which won the 2020 Manga Award if you are an artist.

Furthermore, it is an homage to `` Rebel Without a Cause '' (55), and is consistent with past musical films such as ``Singin' in the Rain '' (52) and ``The Umbrellas of Cherbourg '' (64), making it a popular choice for ``expert'' movie fans. There are many points that are supported by Director Chazelle gathered the staff and cast together and held regular screenings of these films to share their ideas. Visually, it follows the footsteps of past masterpieces, including careful film shooting and a one-cut technique similar to `` Session .''

Also, inextricably linked to this work is `` Under the Silver Lake '' (18), a psychedelic depiction of the dark side of the industry and urban legends set in the same LA. It would be interesting to compare the two works, such as the differences in how Griffith Observatory is depicted (Griffith Observatory is also based on the aforementioned Rebel Without a Cause).

The depth of this work lies in the fact that you can also enjoy the so-called ``vertical axis'' of film history.
