A production that takes advantage of the ``royal road'' of romantic movies



The depth of ``La La Land'' lies in the fact that glamor and cruelty are two sides of the same coin. As mentioned above, it can be said that the way the viewer perceives this work changes greatly depending on where they stand. This ``effect'' seems to reflect the theme of the work itself, which is how to perceive ``admiration.'' In other words, it is the audience's perception of the world of entertainment and art mediated by actresses and musicians.


Do you think of entertainment and art as something to watch, or something to make? If you are on the receiving end, you will be drawn to the "fun" of this work, and if you are on the "sending" side, you will notice the pain. “Which side” am I on? In the sense that it relentlessly exposes the viewer's way of life, this work is more than just a pleasurable entertainment. ``La La Land'' is a musical, a love story, and a human drama about dream chasers, but behind the scenes there is always a conflict between light and shadow, dreams and reality.


There are two "specificities" in this work that strengthen that impression. One is the "absence of supporting characters." Another problem is the gap between dreams and reality.

In fact, Mia or Seb, or the two of them, appear in almost all of ``La La Land,'' except for the opening sequence, ` `Another Day of Sun. '' Although some important characters appear, such as Mia's roommate and Seb's bandmates, the story is basically a story of two people. Because one of the main characters is always on screen, this work is ultimately drawn from a "subjective" perspective.


A story composed only of Mia and Seb's subjective points of view. In other words, "La La Land" omits "the intervention of others" and only shows a "smug" perspective. This structure itself is not that unusual in the love story genre, and could perhaps be called a ``classic production''. However, that is not the case in this work. For some reason. Because ``La La Land'' is not a pure love story.


Mia and Seb didn't come to LA to find love. They visited this city to fulfill their ``dream'' of becoming an actress and a jazz pianist. And the wall that stands in their way is "other people." In both cases, the reins are held by someone other than yourself, such as a producer or store owner. Despite the fact that being chosen is essential for success, the structure of this work, which pushes them to the margins, gradually becomes more tragic.

It's a clever trick where the more the romantic element becomes filled with subjectivity, the more it deviates from the original purpose. Director Chazelle, who had the protagonist say early on in `` Session '' that ``love is a hindrance to expression,'' does not change that mindset in this film, but instead presents a crueler method to test the character. If Mia and Seb choose a love story, they don't need others, but if they want to make a name for themselves as artists, they need to be "chosen" - the intervention of others is necessary. Seb, who is aware of this, tries to choose a path to go forward together, and Mia, who cannot decide between love and dreams, sheds tears. The hesitation between the two eventually leads to a fleeting final scene that will go down in movie history.


Dreams and love are not necessarily in a hostile relationship. However, there will always come a time when you have to choose one or the other. Director Chazelle, who himself had the experience of pursuing a career in music, may have been able to confront the point of view, ``Aren't the scenes where she seems happy a regression to her dreams?'' Even if the screen is full of euphoria, it does not equate to success. For artists, the feeling of hunger becomes their engine. This ``devil'' structure will be more piercing to those who have poured their heart and soul into their dreams.
