What we can see by focusing on Brody

Of particular note is Police Chief Brody, played by Roy Scheider. He is by no means a macho justice man. If you unravel the story here, you will find that Brody's life seems to have two setbacks. One is childhood. Apparently, he had drowned at sea. Perhaps because of this trauma, he never makes any attempt to throw himself into the sea throughout the entire story.

The other thing is his previous post. Originally, he was not born in this area. Although he worked as a police officer in New York, he grew tired of the dangerous environment and moved to this seaside town, saying, ``I can't live in a place like that!'' Since he was once a police officer in a crime-prone city, he must have had a certain sense of mission and justice. However, rather than ``fighting'' there, he chose to ``escape'' elsewhere. That decision seemed natural for a father with a family to protect, but fate did not let him escape.

This is because, ironically, he ends up confronting the most heinous incident of his life and a thug (a shark) at the seaside place where he should have been seeking peace of mind. Precisely because they once held off on fighting, this place they have washed up on is like a final breakwater. He must have been acutely aware of his fate, knowing that he could never escape this time for the sake of his family and residents.

After seeing many victims of sharks, he finally decides to fight. This is different from my time in New York. There may have been a sense of mission to protect his family and citizens, but from the middle onwards, the theme of ``taking control of one's life'' becomes even more prominent.

The characters who board the ship together here are distinctive. One is a young oceanographer (Hooper) and the other is an elderly and experienced fisherman (Quint). Each of them is standing here now with their own connections to sharks, and the fisherman played by Robert Shaw is living in some kind of lost time as a survivor of the Inferno he experienced due to a shark attack during the war. I can even feel that impression.

In any case, by joining forces with them, Police Chief Brody gains a driving force he never had before. While running the main engines of intellectual curiosity and academic knowledge (Hooper), which he overwhelmingly lacks, and fearless action based on empirical rules (Quint), he plunges into a deadly battle at sea. We will continue to invest.
