Reality born from “rejection of catharsis”

Although this film was definitely a "success" in terms of both box office and reputation, the feelings after watching it are indescribably complex. What was the Zodiac incident all about? Questions similar to a sense of despair swirl around, and the audience is unable to return to their daily lives.

However, I think this sense of discomfort is also the great thing about this work. The case remains unsolved, and in 2014, a non-fiction book titled ` `Murderer Zodiac: The Hidden The Truth of the Most Bizarre Case in Criminal History '' was published, which states that `` Zodiac was the father who abandoned him.'' It attracted a lot of attention (released in Japan in 2015). Even now, new evidence and claims continue to agitate the media.

The Zodiac incident is not over yet. The movie ``Zodiac'' clearly shows this simple fact. It's not that there is no catharsis, but that there should be no catharsis. Director Fincher, who has continued to create shocking masterpieces, is able to create a design that takes into account the psychology of the audience after viewing.

And there is one more thing that this work strongly appeals to. That is secondary damage from the incident. people kill people cause an incident. As a result, the lives of the people around them are destroyed. The victim's family, the perpetrator's family, and people in positions such as the media and police. Sin is a sin not only because it takes someone's life, but also because it distorts many lives.

Kazuya Shiraishi's `` Akutsu '' (2013), which was also based on a real-life incident, brutally depicted a magazine reporter played by Takayuki Yamada becoming mentally ill and the aftermath spreading to his family. ``Zodiac'' poignantly conveys the intense disgust that the regrets of the ``secondary victims'' are ignored and turned into entertainment.

Never make something because you think it's ``interesting'' or ``popular.'' The running time of just under three hours can be said to be designed to prioritize the ease of viewing and comfort of the audience, thereby avoiding the risk of missing the voices of the victims that should be conveyed.

Fincher's unwavering faith lies at the root of this, the most ``tranquil'' film in director Fincher's history.
