Hollywood majors hesitated to invest

Lucas invited Willard Huyck, a fellow alumnus of the University of Southern California who would later help him with the screenplay for Star Wars (1977), and his wife, Gloria Katz, to co-write the screenplay, while traveling around Hollywood majors with producer Gary Kurtz, who would continue to collaborate with Lucas for many years after Star Wars. They searched for financing, but were turned down by every company. Each company believed that the production budget would run out just from the licensing fees for the music used in the film.

The first draft, which Lucas wrote in just three weeks, is a compilation of stories inspired by each song from his vast collection of vintage records. The number reached 75 songs. As a result, United Artists, who had originally offered to invest, dropped out.

Unite also expressed disapproval, describing the work as a "music montage with no characters," while foolishly referring to another space opera (not to mention Star Wars) that Lucas had told him about. I will also give up on investment.
