The role of visuals in the story

David Fincher has said, ``The responsibility to tell a great story lies with the storyteller. It has nothing to do with the technique used.''He has said that the focus is on the story. The meticulous visuals and techniques in his films are no more than a way to tell a story.

The visuals that Fincher intended for ``Seven'' were scary, rough, and realistic. In response to this, cinematographer Darius Khondji adopted a special method called ``silver retention'' to develop the film, creating an image with strong shadows that completely darkened the dark areas. With this, the aim is to further emphasize the fear of not knowing what is lurking in the darkness, and to create a presence that is larger than life and a sense of realism, as if you could reach out and touch it, even on a screen that resembles black and white. . In addition, the rough movements of the handheld camera produced realistic images with a documentary feel, creating the visual that Fincher intended. The film was based on `` Call Girl '' (1971) and ` `The French Connection '' (1971).

Also, the sound design hasn't been cut short. In ``Seven,'' even in the interior scenes, police car sirens and the bustle and hustle and bustle of the city are heard throughout, giving a painfully real sense of the everyday life of a city. When creating the SE (sound effects) of this commotion, they prepared a script that included actual situations such as a cleaner and a passerby, wrote down the content of the fight, had actual actors perform the performance, and recorded it. . What's more, instead of using the recorded sound as is for mixing, they played the recorded sound through speakers placed outside the room, and then re-recorded the sound inside the room.

The visuals and sounds are all designed to tell the story. It is a means of realizing the script that I thought was ``amazing.'' Fincher doesn't just want to shoot cool and stylish images in his movies. ``Seven'' was able to become such a masterpiece precisely because the essence of telling a story has never wavered.
