Bernadette lives in the suburbs of Seattle with her husband Elsie (Billy Crudup), who works for an IT company, her daughter Bea (Emma Nelson), who is a high-achieving student and considers herself "best friend to her mother," and her dog. She lives a comfortable life in a quaint, run-down mansion, entrusting her troublesome daily housework to a virtual secretary through digital devices. However, she curses the city of Seattle where she currently lives and behaves provocatively towards the residents of her next door neighbors.

Bernadette was once known as a genius architect who overturned the conventional wisdom of the industry. However, due to a certain incident, she is now a former celebrity who has left the architectural and design industry and is living a life where she tries to avoid contact with others as much as possible. Although intelligent, she is sometimes timid and sometimes critical of society and others. Her difficult nature... is complex and fascinating enough to go beyond the usual framework of a required movie character.

A series of coincidences leads her husband to suspect that she has mental problems. Bernadette's feud with her neighbor Audrey (played by comedic actress Kristen Wiig) contributes to the misunderstanding, but their exchanges are sure to make you laugh. The comedy, reminiscent of Linklater's previous film School of Rock (2003), starring Jack Black, gives this film a bright and light-hearted feel.

Although he only appears a few times, Audrey's son, who smokes marijuana behind closed doors, is also portrayed as a mischievous brat, but with love and charm. It could be said that he alone represents the anxious and unruly youth of director Linklater's " The Bad and the Ugly " (1993).

Although Bernadette was not in a state where her husband was worried, it is also true that she was in a real psychological state. In one scene, Paul (Laurence Fishburne), a friend of Bernadette's in the construction industry, meets her for the first time in a long time. He can tell that she is in a bad state and advises her to "get back to work as soon as possible." For some people, constant creativity leads to mental stability.
