“The Last Boy Scout” was not a hit and received poor reviews.
I think ``The Last Boy Scout'' (1991), directed by master director Tony Scott, is an unfortunate film. It was expected to be a huge hit before its release, but in 1991 it ranked 21st in the box office in the United States. The film's content received few positive reviews, with many critics dissatisfied with its depiction of extreme violence and treatment of women.
However, one of America's most prominent film critics, Roger Ebert, wrote the following review in conjunction with the release of this film.
"The Last Boy Scout is a perfect example of what a vulgar, misogynistic action thriller is: glamorous, masterful, cynical, smart, decadent. How should we criticize it? "Isn't it? It would be dishonest to give a negative review, because this is a masterfully crafted film." (Excerpt from Roger Ebert.com, translation by the author)

Ebert gave a sarcastic compliment, even writing, ``I'm sure this movie will be a hit.'' That prediction was spectacularly wrong, but I don't think Evert's aesthetic sense was wrong. ``The Last Boy Scout'' is one of the most appealing films in the ``buddy movie'' format, which continues unabated in American film history.
